Reaction from Workshop Participants
“Yes, it helped me express myself and open up myself to people. Helps people
better understand rather than make assumptions and think things but they are not”
“This is beneficial because at least somebody knows what I am going through, somebody knows how I feel. I think this is good.”
Reaction from Mental Health Staff
“I’ve learned quite a few things from your therapy program that you did with
the patients and I hope to continue using those activities with the patients, also applying our Occupational Therapy group therapy procedure as well, I think it will be beneficial to
“As a technician, I find it quite useful with the students because they are also having a role to play, especially when they are back in their communities after they have when qualified wherever they will be working so they will have a very good understanding of stigma”
Healing through Art Project
The Healing through Art project aims to aid and empower the population of individuals with mental illness within Swaziland by hosting art workshops for psychiatric patients.
The initiative is rooted in the principle that art can help break through communication barriers by providing an alternative means of expressing an experience to others in a way that spoken words cannot always succeed.
The goal is to create a forum where psychiatric patients can safely share their experiences with others
through artistic depictions to increase understanding about mental illness.
- IMERSE staff members Timothy Sandoe, Dumsani Mamba, Manoj Kanagaraj, and Katherine Fernelius organized and hosted daily art workshops with inpatients of the National Psychiatric Referral Hospital in Manzini
- The organization hosted an art workshop with outpatients of thePsychiatric Unit of the Mbabane Government Hospital
